Politician. He was elected as a member of the New Jersey General Assembly in 1859 and served in the New Jersey Senate from 1862 to 1863. He served as the Governor of New Jersey from 1869 to 1872, and represented the state in the US Senate from 1875 to 1881. In the US Senate, he was chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs. He also invented a stitching machine and a steam typewriter and was one of the executors of the estate of American entrepreneur, industrialist and banking magnate Abel Minard.
