PIONEER IS TAKEN WITH NO WARNING
Heart Attack Fatal to Charles Rayfield in a Few Minutes
No warning came to Charles Rayfield, pioneer resident of the city,
when death claimed him this morning at his home, 1701 Washington
street, a heart attack suffered while he was apparently in his usual
health, resulting in death within a few minutes after he suffered the
stroke. He was about the house and suddently collapsed and within
fifteen mintues the end had come. His demise is a great shock to family
and friends, emphasized by tthe suddenness of his taking away.
Mr. Rayfield, despite his 83 years, was in good physical condition and
except for after effects of the flu from which he suffered last summer
was apparently well. He had not complained and this morning had made
plans for the day which he was setting to carry out when he was
stricken.
Resident Here 68 Years.
Mr. Rayfield was one of the oldest residents of Manitowoc county, having
been born in Germany January 12, 1843(sic). He came to Wisconsin at the
age of 16, locating here and for 68 years had made his home in this
section. For many years he was engaged in farming near the city and retired
in 1913 to make his home in town. He was married 62 years ago to Charlotte
Wilharms, who preceded him in death 11 years ago. The eleven children
born to the couple survive, being Mrs. Anna Eller, Milwaukee, Marie, Mrs.
Henry Esch, this city; Mrs. William Vandegrift, Greenville, Mich.; John,
Charles, George, Hugo and Fred, of Chicago, William at Detroit and Hebert,
who with his sister, Marie, made their home with their father here.
Fourteen grandchildren and one great grandchild also survive.
