George was born in 1847 in London, Ontario, Canada. He started on the stage at the age of 15 and was credited with originating soft shoe dancing. He and Jack Haverly established an act that later lead to the formation of Barlow, Wilson, Primrose & West's minstrels, which toured the US in the 1880s. He later worked with Lew Dockstader until 1910.

George died in San Diego, CA after an illness of four weeks.
