Woman who cooked for UAW sit-down strikers dies at 92 Genevieve Bates, 92
Once Genevieve Bates made up her mind, there was no changing it.
Bates, 92, who was involved in the Sit-Down Strike of 1936-37, died Sunday at her son's home in Flint.
Bates married her first husband in the 1930s. While married, Bates worked at Fisher Body No. 2 while her husband, Dale Redmond, worked for Fisher Body No 1. When Redmond stayed in the shop during the strike, Bates brought the sit-down strikers food every day, which she prepared herself.
"She was still very involved in all of the meetings," said her son, Wayne Bates. "She attended all the functions the UAW had. She always went to the Labor Day commemoration."
Redmond died shortly after the strike. At the time, Bates had a daughter, Sharon Redmond, and was pregnant with a son, whom she named Dale.
"She was pregnant with my brother during the Depression, and she had a pretty rough time," Bates said. "She made it, though. Soon after that, she met my dad, and I came along."
The Depression wasn't the only tough time she faced, Bates said. Wayne Bates' father died in 1978, and Bates remarried again in the 1990s. By the time Genevieve Bates died, she had buried three husbands and two children, Wayne Bates said.
"She always used to tell me 'Don't you leave me, too,'" he said.
Later, Bates spent 16 years as a ward clerk at the former St. Joseph Hospital.
Throughout her life, Bates enjoyed traveling and playing cards. She also wrote memoirs about the history of her family, which was extremely important to her, said her niece, Phyllis Stone. Her favorite trips were to Frankenmuth, where she frequently traveled with niece Delores Brooks and Stone.
"She lived a good, full life, and she enjoyed it," Stone said. "And we enjoyed having her around."
Bates leaves her son, Wayne; sister, Alice; brother Richard, seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
