Mildred Presson Arnold Harrison, 92, died Sept. 19, 2009, in Christiana, Tenn., of complications associated with heart disease.
Mildred was born Feb. 25, 1917, to Herman and Flora Presson in Camden, Tenn. She was the oldest of 10 children. She was baptized at Liberty Methodist Church in 1929. She graduated valedictorian from Camden High School in 1933. She began teaching at Liberty School in 1936. In 1939, Mildred graduated with a bachelor's degree from Bethel College. She later obtained her master's degree from Peabody University and continued her post graduate studies at the University of Tennessee. Mildred married Polie Arnold in 1940 at Belmont Methodist Church in Nashville, Tenn. In 1944, they moved to Oak Ridge, where Polie worked at the K-25 plant and Mildred taught elementary school for the majority of her 42-year teaching career. In 1947, they moved to Clinton, where they raised their two children. Polie died in 1973 of a heart attack.In 1982, Mildred married Bill Harrison. They were together until his death in 2001. Mildred was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Clinton for 62 years. For 30 years, she served as secretary for the Anderson County Council for Aging. The family will be receiving friends at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, and on Friday, Sept. 25, at 10 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the funeral following at 11 a.m. The burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Liberty United Methodist Church in Camden Tenn. The family will receive friends at Liberty Church from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday morning.The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Liberty United Methodist Church in Camden, Tenn., or to Memorial United Methodist in Clinton.
