Funeral services for Dorothy Jean (Powell) Allen, 98, Springfield, Missouri and formerly of West Plains, will be at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 15, 2011 with Pastor J. Michael Heston officiating in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Allen joined her heavenly family at 4:20 p.m. on Monday, September 12, 2011 at The Manor Of Elfindale, Springfield, Missouri. Dorothy resided in West Plains, Missouri for over ninety years prior to moving to Springfield to be near her family. Her heart never left West Plains where she was born on March 19, 1913. Dorothy was the daughter of James Kelse Powell and Ona Anderson Powell.
She was united in marriage to G. Dail Allen in 1932. Dorothy was a librarian at the West Plains Public Library for nineteen years before her retirement in 1977. She played a critical role in the growth of the library over the span of her dedicated career. Her love of books and thought provoking prose brought her joy throughout life, the Bible being the most cherished in her collection.
She was a lifetime member of the First Christian Church in West Plains. She was a member of the choir, served as Deaconess, Secretary to the Board and President of the Women's Fellowship. She was also a charter member of the South Central Missouri Genealogical Society and Friends of the Library. Dorothy was a tremendous cook and loved to entertain friends and family. She enjoyed golfing, knitting, reading, bird watching and working in her flower garden. Anyone fortunate enough to have met her knew her as one of the most genuinely kind and loving spirits the Lord has shared with the world. Her laugh was infectious, her ever-positive attitude inspiring, and her love always unconditional. She gave freely and generously to anyone in need, family or otherwise, leaving an indelible mark within each heart.
Dorothy is survived by her son, James Dail Allen; six grandchildren and their spouses, Kelly Woodard, Mark Allen, Shawna Allen, Franci Oliver, Brandly Allen and Chance Allen; fifteen great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her goddaughter, Christine White of West Plains.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gordon Dail Allen; three sisters, Virginia French, Pauline Kelso and Faye Fleming; one brother, William K. Powell; her wonderful step-mother, Nora Lillian Fox Powell; as well as her daughter-in-law, Elaine Thomas Allen.
Dorothy will be greatly missed; however, her family celebrates with her a life full of happiness, laughter, and music. She is greatly loved and will be in our hearts until we see her again.
Mrs. Allen will lie in state from 4:00 p.m., Wednesday until service time at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Burial will be next to her family at Oak Lawn Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or the West Plains Public Library and may be left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home.
