Jerry Joe Poulson, 79, passed away at 10:09 p.m. Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at IU Health Blackford Community Hospital.
He was born in Hartford City on July 31, 1935 to the late Harold H. Poulson and the late Garnet A. (McCammon) Poulson - Reller.
Jerry married Peggy B. (Gothrup) Poulson on June 5, 1955 and she precedes him in death on July 27, 1997.
He married Patricia "Patty" D. (Markin) Shreves-Poulson on October 3, 1998 at Grace United Methodist Church by Rev. Lloyd Hall and Dr. Norman Glassburn.
Jerry retired in 1995. He was a Pipe Fitter for 50 plus years. He had also worked at Johnson Control for 23 years. Jerry was the Owner-Operator of J & M Mechanical Contractors, he also formerly was the Co-Owner-Co-Operator of P.J. Sports Hut, located on the Square in Hartford City, for 23 years. P.J.'s Sports Hut had sponsored many sports teams in the community.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Blackford Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite (Valley of Ft. Wayne), Mizpah Shrine Club Ft. Wayne, Sons of the American Legion, Sons of the AMVETS, Local 440 Plumber and Steam Fitters Union in Muncie, Portland Moose Lodge. He was also a 50 year member of the Elks Lodge #625, where he was the Past Exulted Ruler.
Jerry won a State of Indiana Master Welder Contest. He spent four years teaching welding and pneumatics controls to the apprentices for the Pipe Fitters Union. He was the first Hartford City Building Commissioner and had been instrumental in setting code enforcement rules and regulations for residential and commercial building.
Jerry always enjoyed boating and summering at Seacrest Lake. He had been summering at the Lake since 1961.
He was a Charter Member of the Hartford City Little League. He was the initiator with his wife, Peg, for the Heritage Days Basketball Tournament. He was an avid NASCAR fan, was a creative out of the box problem solver and always had "hot cars". Jerry was well known for all of his commitment and support to the community. But above all else he cherished his family.
Jerry will be sadly missed by his wife, Patricia "Patty" D. Shreves-Poulson of Hartford City; children, Joni L. (husband, Steve) VanFossan of Hartford City; James H. (wife, Kathy) Poulson of Eaton; Beth A. (husband, Rick) Clark of Miami, Indiana; Scott C. (wife, Lana) Shreves of Plainfield, Illinois; Sarah D. (husband, Tim) Row of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; grandchildren, Ami (husband, Barry) Huffman, Brad (wife, Amanda) Slentz, Drew Slentz (Fiancé, Megan Bilbo), Samantha (husband, Zachary) Pursifull, Christina (husband, Nick) Kuzma, Andrew Poulson, Emily (husband, Jordan) Nicholson, Zack (wife, Heather) Clark, Skylar Shreves, Katelyn Shreves, Jadyn Row, Jesse Row; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, Nancy Jane (husband, Tom) Powers of Ft. Meyers of Florida; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church, 312 W. Washington St., Hartford City with Rev. Lloyd Hall and Pastor Gary Hall officiating. Jerry will be cremated following the funeral service.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2014 and from 12 to 2 p.m. Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Grace United Methodist Church.
