Retired Colonel John Patrick Portasik, of Albuquerque, N.M., passed away peacefully Thursday, June 9, 2011. Born March 15, 1930, and raised in Ford City, John graduated from Ford City High School in 1948 as a member of the National Honor Society and having lettered in football and basketball. He received an athletic scholarship to Virginia Military Institute where he majored in electrical engineering. While teaching at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, he earned his doctorate in electrical engineering. He spent 27 years as a pilot and engineer in the Air Force and saw active duty in Vietnam. He spent his retirement years building and patenting his many inventions and growing prize winning orchids. John is survived by three daughters, Lee Ann Warner, of Memphis, Tenn., Dr. Laura Shymansky, of Pittsburgh, and Linda Portasik, of Hobe Sound, Fla.; his brother, Father Richard Portasik, of Pittsburgh; son-in-law, Dr. Steve Shymansky; and four grandchildren, Ryan, John, Laurel and Robert Shymansky. John will be laid to rest with his wife, Lila Lee Portasik, and son, John Patrick Portasik Jr., in a private service at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements by FRENCH FUNERALS AND CREMATIONS, 9300 Golf Course Road NW, Albuquerque, N.M., 505-897-0300.
