BOYDTON- BEALES, Harriett Pittard, 100, widow of Walter R. Beales, Jr., passed away August 28, 2013. The oldest of the three children of Luther Allen Pittard and Grace Burt Jones Pittard of Clarksville, one of her early memories was going with her mother to the nearby train station where her father was stationmaster to wave to the newly enlisted young soldiers on the many trains going by taking these "doughboys" off to fight in World War I. Knowing that they must be naturally apprehensive to be going off to fight the "Great War," her mother wanted to show their support, and Harriett learned early how to serve and empathize with others at a young age—thus developing a wonderful servant's heart that she used to serve others for the rest of her life. Harriett grew up in Clarksville, graduating from Clarksville High School in 1930. She entered the College of William and Mary at age 17 and during her four years there was elected Chairman of the Women's Honor Council and also Vice President of the Women's Student Government. She was inducted into Mortar Board national honorary society for college leaders. As a senior, she was crowned May Queen. After graduating in 1934, she returned to her hometown and taught Home Economics, English, and other courses at Clarksville and Boydton High Schools during the Great Depression. She married her husband, Walter, in 1941, and they reached their golden anniversary before his death in 1992. Mrs. Beales served as organist at Boydton United Methodist Church for over 62 years and was very active also as a Sunday School teacher, in the United Methodist Women, and on the church's Administrative Council. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames. Mrs. Beales was also a leader in saving historic 18th Century Prestwould House on the Roanoke River near Clarksville and served on its Board of Trustees for many years. On her 50th class anniversary at W&M, her sons created the Harriett Pittard Beales Scholarship there to benefit a student from South Central Virginia. Mrs. Beales was also active in mentoring young people in the community well into her 80's—often taking under her wing young people who were promising or from a disadvantaged background. Mrs. Beales celebrated her 100th birthday on June 1 with much of her extended family in attendance. She is survived by two sons, Walter R. Beales III, an attorney; and the Honorable Randolph Allen Beales, a judge on the Court of Appeals of Virginia; her daughter-in-law, Dr. Julie Leftwich Beales; and five grandchildren, Randolph Allen Beales, Jr., Francis Burke Leftwich Beales, Caroline Carruthers Beales, Elizabeth Annette Beales, and Grace Gallion Beales; one sister, Grace Pittard Sydnor; and four nieces and three nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Henry Sims Pittard. The family will receive friends at Watkins-Cooper-Lyon Funeral Home in Clarksville on Friday, August 30, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. A service of celebration of her life will be conducted on Saturday, August 31, at 11:00 a.m. at Boydton United Methodist Church with the Reverends Richard L. Meiser and Jeffry Yoo-Hess officiating. Interment will follow at Boydton Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boydton United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 381, Boydton, VA 23917 or to Historic Prestwould Foundation, P. O. Box 872, Clarksville, VA 23927.
