Claude M. Phipps, 97, of Grove Manor Nursing Home, Grove City, since 2000, formerly of Clintonville, died at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2007, after a brief illness. Mr. Phipps had lived at Clintonville for more than 60 years prior to moving to Grove City. Born Nov. 12, 1909, in Irwin Township, Venango County, he was the son of Lowry Phipps and Alma Surrena.

He attended the public school in Irwin Township and also attended Wesley High School located in Wesley. He was a graduate of Grove City High School. Mr. Phipps had worked as a machinist at Cooper Energies-Cooper Cameron in Grove City until his retirement in 1973. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Clintonville where he was active as a deacon and attending Sunday school in earlier years. Mr. Phipps enjoyed gardening and yard work and hunting in earlier years and most of all his family and grandchildren. He was married June 6, 1934, to Olive L. McElroy, who preceded him in death Sept. 18, 1993.

Surviving are one son, James W. Phipps and wife, Charlotte L., of Grove City; three grandchildren, Mrs. Patrick (Sharon) Stone of Butler, the Rev. Richard J. Phipps and wife, Marsha, of West Mifflin and Randy E. Phipps and wife, Rita, of Perrysburg, Ohio; and five great-grandchildren, Katie Stone and Tyler Stone of Butler, McKenna and Abby Phipps of West Mifflin and Kade Phipps of Perrysburg, Ohio. He also is survived by two brothers, Paul Phipps of Grove City and Andy Phipps of California. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Phipps was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille McNeese and Donna Phipps.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton St., Clintonville. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Richard J. Phipps of Homestead Park United Methodist Church, West Mifflin, grandson of Mr. Phipps, officiating. Interment will follow in the Clintonville Methodist Cemetery, Clintonville.
