A memorial service for Charlotte Hart, 89 of Tyler, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home with Dr. Charles Dodson and Rev. Robert Carter officiating.
Charlotte Hart was born in Greenville, Texas on November 18, 1925, to the late Charles Herbert Phillips and Jessie Mae Bradshaw Phillips. She died on January 20, 2015, after a brave fight with cancer. In addition to Greenville, Charlotte lived in Mission, Galveston, LaMarque, and Edgewood, but Tyler was “home.”
Moving to Tyler in high school, Charlotte graduated from Tyler High School and attended the University of Houston, East Texas State, and Texas Women’s University. Her careers include work with the Texas Welfare Department in the area of elderly assistance and with Tyler ISD and Edgewood ISD as a mathematics teacher. She worked in both Roberts and Stewart Jr. Highs while in Tyler, retiring after 35 years. Charlotte loved helping people as evidenced by the thanks she received from the many students she mentored.
Charlotte married the late Sterling Claude Hart on December 20, 1947, in Tyler at the Calvary Baptist Church and celebrated one month shy of 60 years of marriage when he passed away. Every person who knew the couple has a humorous story to tell about “Claude and Charlotte.” Their love story is the epitome of opposites attracting and forging a union that lasted.
After the Harts retired from teaching they entered another career together. Each fall for 15 years, Charlotte and Claude lead craft seminars for the Southern Baptist Convention in both Glorietta, NM and Ridgecrest, NC. Charlotte’s creative expertise in sewing, crochet, and crafting resulted in the couple meeting and making friends of people throughout the US.
Charlotte loved studying the Bible and sharing the good news about Jesus. She was a member of Green Acres, First Baptist, and The Woods churches and served as a ladies Sunday school teacher. She also was a Bible Study Fellowship International graduate. Charlotte and Claude were involved in building churches in the US and other countries, supported missionaries, and traveled to personally lend a hand.
Charlotte is lovingly known to her family as “Meemaw” and each person in the family has memories of her helping them in some generous way. Charlotte is survived by one brother Charles Phillips and wife Alice of Longview, two daughters and sons-in-law, Michaela Hart and R.J. Marcuse III of Canyon and Ft. Worth, and Nancy and Stephen Kirkpatrick of Tyler. Grandchildren include Sydney English of Ft. Worth, Ben and Michele Landrum of Lillian, Al., Beth and Todd Gillispie of Tyler. Great grandchildren include Mia and Jayden Gillispie and Chase and Davis Landrum. She is also survived by two loving sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, Peggy and Richard Boone and Dorothy Johnson as well as many nieces and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers include: Hoyt Berryman, Davis Brewster, Dr. Charles Dodson, Dean Eades, Roy Hood, Dennis Ortega, Jimmy McEnturff, Dr. Paul Powell and Harry Whitlow.
