James Gerald "Duffty" Phend, 85, a retired local building contractor, died at 9:05 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, 1994 at Miller's Merry Manor, Columbia City, where he had been a patient for several years. He was born on Oct. 16, 1908, in Columbia City, a son of Henry and Susie L. Yarian Phend. His formative years were spent in Columbia City where he completed his education in 1930. After completing his education, he entered the contracting business with his father, constructing numerous homes adn store fronts in the Columbia City area. He later worked for a number of years for the R. L. McCoy Contstruction Company building bridges.
In 1937, he was married to Edna M. Mullendore and they have always made their home in Columbia City. Mrs. Phend died Feb. 14, 1982. He was a former member of the Eagles, Moose, and Elks. He is survived by two sons, James S. Phend, Pierceton, and Steven G. Phend, Columbia City; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Jane) Sroufe, Columbia City; four grandchildren, Tammy and Todd Sroufe and Michael and Gregory Phend.
He was the last of ten brothers and sisters, preceded by Victor, Donald, Virgil, Paul, Russell, Cecil, Richard, Berneice and Gladys.
The funeral service will be held at 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with Rev. J. Phillip Blake, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 and 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Greenhill Cemetery.
