Russell was the son of Henry A. Phend and Susie Lula Yarian.
He married on May 5, 1923, Whitley County, Indiana, to Helen Juanita Magley.
They appear with 3 children in the 1930 census of Columbia City, Whitley County, Indiana. He was an onion farmer.

Russell "Dursty" Phend, 82, 1103 South Pinellis Avenue, Tarpon Springs, Florida, a former Whitley County resident, died at 7:14 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Tarpon Springs Hospital following a long illness.
He was born in Columbia City October 16, 1900, a son of Henry and Susie L. Yarian Phend. His formative years were spent in Columbia City where he completed his education in the local schools.
Following his marriage to Juanita Magley they established their first home in Columbia City, later moving to Springport, Mich., where he managed and operated a garage and service station until his retirement. Mr. and Mrs. Phend had resided in Tarpon Springs for the past ten years.
The survivors, in addition to his wife, Juanita, include two sons, Ralph Phend, Hortonville, Mich., and Roger Phend, Winston Salem, N. C.; three daughters, Mrs. Louise Fischman, Jackson, Mich., Mrs. Nancy Horsch, Jackson, Mich., and Mrs. Sue Bradford, Springport, Mich.' Twenty grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Victor Phend, Donald Phend, and Gerald "Dufty" Phend, all of Columbia City, and Cecil Phend, Merriam; and one sister, Mrs. Bernyce Turner, Temple City, Calif. His parents, a son, Keith, and two brothers, Virgil and Paul, are deceased.
A memorial service will be Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Smith and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Allen Nye, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. For those who prefer, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
In order that a personal wish of Mr. Phend might be carried out, cremation will be at the Venson Funeral Home in Tarpon Springs. Final burial will be in the Greenhill Cemetery.
