Miss Pfitzenmaier passed away Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Iowa Masonic Nursing Home, Bettendorf, after an extended illness. Bernice Elizabeth Pfitzenmaier was born Sept. 21, 1910, in Sherrard, Ill., to Elmer and Pearl (Love) Pfitzenmaier. Her family moved in 1920 to rural Scott County. Bernice graduated from Davenport High School and attended Coe College. She taught in rural schools and later at Lincoln and Washington elementary schools in Bettendorf. She traveled the United States while working for the Ironrite Co. and had enjoyed travel in Europe. Her most recent employment was in the book department at Peterson Harned Von Maur. Bernice loved children and was a special sister/mother to her five younger brothers, as well as a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, reading, sewing, crafts and showing acts of kindness to other people. She formerly was a member of Summit Presbyterian Church, which was dear to her heart, and transferred her membership to First Presbyterian Church, Davenport, where she resided.

Memorials may be made to Scott County Historical Society for the preservation of the Summit Presbyterian Church or Shriners Hospital for Children.

Bernice is survived by brothers and spouses, David (Charlotte), Rocky River, Ohio, Benjamin (Jane), Davenport, and Raymond (Marilyn) and Charles (Phyllis) both of Bettendorf; and sister-in-law, Emily Pfitzenmaier, Corinth, Texas, along with 11 nieces and nephews and 18 grandnieces and grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Richard; nephews, Robert and Donald; and sisters-in-law, Helen and Norma. She will be sorely missed as she was an important person in our lives and those with whom she came in contact with. May she find peace and happiness in the House of the Lord.
