Samson's parents had 8 children, but 4 of them did not live past infancy. His known siblings were: Peter N. Petersen 26 May 1858-23 Dec 1880, Hans P. N. Petersen 12 Dec 1859- 6 May 1937 (Lisbet Karine "Libbie" Johnson 30 Dec 1859-1 Feb 1932), Mette N. "Mattie" Petersen 11 Mar 1862-6 Aug 1863 and Cornelius N. Petersen 12 Jul 1866-21 Jan 1924.
Samson attended local schools and completed high school. He began teaching in Clinton County, Iowa in 1881. In 1886 he came to Norman County and taught there for four years.
Samson married Bertha Margaret Johnson 21 Mar 1888 in Norman County, MN.
In the fall of 1890, Samson began clerking at a store in Ada, MN. In 1891 he was clerking for A. J. Kroshus in his Perley store and continued doing so for two years and then he clerked for two years in the Aabye Store at Perley. He next went to Fargo for a year and clerked for Alex Stern, Clothier and from there the family moved to Horace, ND where he clerked in a general store there.
The children were educated in Horace and the family was active in the Horace Lutheran Church.
In 1904 Samson bought out a general merchandise store from Lauritz Johnson in Perley. He operated this store until he retired in 1934. Many homes in the Perley area had some of the fine china and cut glass which came from "Uncle Sam's" store.
Samson and Bertha were the parents of three children and foster parents to one daughter. They are: Nels Gerhard 19 Sep 1888-2 Oct 1975 (Bertha Albertine Olson 15 Oct 1889-21 Oct 1982), Beatrice 9 Nov 1889-20 Nov 1973 and Stella Mildred ca. Mar 1899-4 Sep 1899. They were foster parents to Laura Underlee from the Hendrum area. She was a missionary to Madagascar for 32 years. She was known as Sister Laura Underlee Petersen, 24 Jan 1897-12 Jan 1958, and is buried as Laura Andria Underlee in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Hendrum.
During his time in Perley, Samson was active in the civic affairs of the community and was a member of the city council and as clerk of the local school board. He was a deacon of the Kirkebo Lutheran Church in Perley for a number of years and was active in church work.
Samson Petersen passed away at his home in Perley 28 Nov 1939. Funeral services were held at the Kirkebo Lutheran Church, Perley, MN 1 Dec 1939. Pastor Thomas Anderson officiated at the service. Pallbearers were six nephews: Gilbert Kroshus, Tom, Gjert, Chester and Hjalmer Dosland and Paul Jacobson. Honorary pallbearers were: George Jacobson, M. A. Larson, G. Ericksen, Hans Strand and John Nelson.
