CUMBERLAND — Alvin Kay "Al" Persons, 80, of Cumberland, formerly of Frostburg, passed peacefully Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home after a long struggle with Alzheimers Disease. He joins his wife, Floellen "Flo" N. (Stafford) Persons, who preceded him in death on Feb. 8, 2007, in heaven after 53 years of marriage.
Born in Halettsville, Texas, on Nov. 10, 1932, Al was raised and went to school in Yoakum, Texas. He was the son of the late Mary Edith (Evans) and Charles Alvin Persons.
He later worked at C&P Telephone Company, Bell Atlantic and retired from Verizon, in Cumberland. He was a member of Mount Hermon United Methodist Church. At the church, he had served as a Sunday School Teacher, Trustee, and member of the church choir. He was a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War. As a marine he was a member of the "Chosen Few." He was a member of the Frostburg American Legion. A bowler, Al bowled at Sherwood Bowling Lanes, Frostburg the Bowler, and White Oaks. A musician, Al played guitar in a local blue grass band. Al also loved the outdoors, he camped at Big Bear Lake with his family and was an amateur photographer. Al and Flo met on a train while traveling from Texas. During that three day journey, they fell in love and were later married on July 14, 1954.
He is survived by three daughters, Cynthia K. Snyder and husband Ron, of LaVale, Peggy L. Scarpelli and husband John, of Frostburg and Shelia M. Ricker and husband Terry, of LaVale; one son, John C. Persons and wife Karen, of Cumberland; twelve grandchildren, Mickey C. McGeady, of Ridgeley, John T. McGeady and wife Keisha, of Rawlings, Justin T. Scarpelli, of LaVale, Leah M. Scarpelli, of Washington, D.C., Matthew P. Scarpelli, of Short Gap, Seth A. Ricker, of LaVale, Brianna L. Persons, of Cumberland, Austin J. Persons, of Oldtown, Krysten E. Snyder, of LaVale, Rachel L. Scarpelli, of Frostburg, Jenna E. Snyder, of Frederick, and Julia Grace Persons, of Cumberland; five great-grandchildren, Brennan T. McGeady, Liam W. McGeady, both of Finzel, Owen T. McGeady, Declan C. McGeady, of Rawlings and Adina R. Scarpelli, of Westminster; a great-granddaughter due in December; a sister, Marguarite Denton, of Fort Worth, Texas and a very special cousin, Eula Mae Ford and husband Phillip, of Yoakum, Texas.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave. (www.scarpellifh.com) on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Iser officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Military honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veteran's Honor Guard.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Mick McGeady, John McGeady, Justin Scarpelli, Matthew Scarpelli, Seth Ricker and Austin Persons.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Al's memory may make contributions to the Mount Hermon United Meth-odist Church.
