Gordon '' Abie '' Pendleton, 66, of Ferry Road, died Monday at a Portland hospital.
He was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, a son of Daniel and Alfreda Coburn Pendleton.
He attended the Saco schools and graduated from Thornton Academy in 1948 where he excelled in football and was selected All State as well as National High School Little All American.
He attended the University of Maine in Orono where he earned his BS in education and a Masters Degree in Administration. While at Maine he played fullback and was honored by being chosen All Maine and All New England.
Following graduation, he taught several years at Lawrence High School in Fairfield, and then three years in Barnstable on Cape Cod. He came to Deering High School, Portland in 1957 as football coach and later became the Athletic Director. He retired from Deering in 1980. He purchased Garside's Ice Cream in Saco, which he still owns.
He served on the Saco City council under then Mayor Denny Worthing and during his term served on the City's Charter Investigation Committee and was the prime mover of the city administrator form of government.
He served as director of the New England Baptist Convention in Ocean Park and from 1989 to 1992 was President of Thornton Academy Alumni Association, Member of the Biddeford Saco Rotary Club and the First Parish Church UCC, Saco.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Vibert Pendleton; one son, Eric of Lyon, France; three brothers, Charles and Carlton, both of Saco, and Kenneth of Florida and Saco.
