Ellen Pellman Hartman, 77, of 1305 Hillcrest Drive, Harrisonburg, died July 27, 2004, at her home.

Ellen was born Aug. 13, 1926, in Richfield, Pennsylvania, and was the daughter of the late LeRoy and Elizabeth Lauver Pellman. Ellen graduated from Eastern Mennonite High School in 1945. She began taking classes at Eastern Mennonite College in 1970, graduating with a B.A. in English in 1989 at the age of 62. One of her interests in writing personal and local history culminated in assisting in the production of a book, "Connecting the Generations," about her husband's life here in the Shenandoah Valley. Ellen was a homemaker and was always very active in volunteering. She was a member of Park View Mennonite Church where she served in many areas including worship, education, library, writer and elder. In the 1970's she worked with Project Concern, a local organization assisting low-income families. She served on many boards, including Eastern Mennonite High School, Laurelville Mennonite Church Center, MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Association).

On June 30, 1945, she married Dwight W. Hartman who survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Jeanne Hartman Rinker of Harrisonburg, three sons; Jim Hartman and wife Carolyn of Harrisonburg, Curt Hartman and wife Jackie of Bridgewater, Mark Hartman and wife Sharon of Pella, Iowa. Seven Grandchildren; Scott Hartman and wife Lisa, Brett Hartman and wife Leah, Lindsay Rinker, Nicholas Hartman and wife Lindsay, R.C. Hartman, Lee Hartman, Jennifer Risser. Great-Grandchildren; Chase Hartman, Jacob Hartman and Allie Morton. Three Sisters; Freda Pellman Redekop and husband Calvin of Harrisonburg, Ferne Pellman of Lancaster, Pa., Miriam Pellman Maust and husband Wilbur of Waterloo, Ontario. Four brothers; Hubert Pellman and wife Mildred, Charles Pellman and wife Anna Mae both of Harrisonburg, Richard Pellman and wife Betty of Lititz, Pa., William Pellman and wife Ruth of New Holland, Pa., thirty-five nieces and nephews.

Pastors Barbara Moyer Lehman and Phil Kniss will conduct a Memorial Service Friday, July 30, 2004, at 11 a.m. at the Park View Mennonite Church. A private burial service will be held at Weavers Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Rockingham Memorial Hospital Cancer Center, 235 Cantrell Ave., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801 or Park View Mennonite Church Building Fund, 1600 College Avenue, Harrisonburg, Virginia 22802.
