Memorial services for Sam Peebles, Jr. born May, 27, 1921, passed away at his home in Rockdale Friday, September, 26, 2008, will be held Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at 2:00 PM at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Rockdale. A visitation is not planned.
He graduated from Lexington High School in 1938 and from Baylor University in 1942. He was a US Navy veteran serving from 1942 to 1946. Last rank, Lieutenant Commander; Commander of Mare Island, CA, Naval Shipyard. Also served two years Sea Duty in the invasions of Northwest Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and Southern France.
After discharge in 1946, he came to Rockdale as a partner and manager of a hardware store until 1962 when he was appointed Postmaster. He served as Postmaster for Rockdale from 1963 to 1982 and retired from ranching in 1996.
He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. He served as President of Rockdale Young Men's Business League, President of Rockdale Chamber of Commerce, member of Rockdale School Board, member of Rockdale Rotary Club since 1955 and served twice as president, lay reader of St. Thomas Episcopal Church and was a member of the Rockdale VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents: his wife, "Bootsie" Peebles on October, 31, 1996; his son, Sam P. Peebles III on December 29, 1983; and two brothers. Survivors: Daughter, Pattie Ivey of Austin; Brother; Wyley Peebles of Lexington; sisters: Rosa Lewis of La Grange, Ascenia Underwood of Lexington.
