Gertrude McKevitt Pedersen, 93, of Rockford died Thursday, March 31, 2011. Born June 28, 1917, in Vinton, Iowa, to Phillip and Nina McKevitt.
She was a 1940 graduate of Broadlawns Hospital School of Nursing. Gertrude married Harold L. Pedersen on May 8, 1943, in Vinton.
A veteran of World War II, Gertrude was an Army nurse with the 105th Evacuation Hospital with the rank of first lieutenant. She was a part of the first medical unit to enter Dachau concentration camp to care for survivors.
She was a member of American Legion Post 864. Gertrude was a 52-year member and honorary past regent of Rockford Chapter NSDAR. She was also a member of Colonial Dames of the 17th Century and Hempstead Chapter of Daughters of American Colonists and a 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star.
A longtime member of Centennial United Methodist Church, where she was very active in many areas of the church. She later attended Evergreen Covenant Church.
Survivors include son, Phillip (Terrie) Pedersen of Littleton, Colo.; daughter, Miriam (Bruce) Jacobson of Rockford; grandchildren, Leslie (Jeremy) LeBeau, David and Lindsey Jacobson, Mark (Mindy), Erin and Emily Pedersen; great-grandchildren, Ryan and Adriana LeBeau and Annabelle Pedersen; sister, Nancy Munn of Arvada Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by parents; sister Margaret Schueler; and brothers, Phillip Reeve and James.

Memorial service at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 16, in Evergreen Covenant Church, 3990 Prairie Road; Pastor James Schwalm will officiate.
