Mildred K. Copenhaver, 1617 Overhill Road, Bristol, Va., passed away on Monday, September 7, 2009, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born on November 1, 1923, in Tazewell, Va., to the late Samuel A. and Minnie L. Patteson. She graduated from Radford University in home economics and completed art courses at the Appalachian State Teacher's College. Mildred was preceded in death by her first husband, William E. Kirk, on March 8, 1963, and second husband, James H. Copenhaver, on October 5, 1988. Mildred taught art for 23 years in Bristol Va., High School and retired in 1988. She also taught home economics at George Wythe High School, Wytheville, Va. She was a very active member in Anne Carter Lee Chapter of the Untied Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) and the Fort Chiswell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). She was a member of State Street United Methodist Church. Survivors include a sister, Margaret Mitchell, of Seattle, Wash.; two brothers, Andrew W. Patteson, of Houston, Texas, and John R. Patteson, of Falls Church, Va. The funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2009, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mike Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, Rural Retreat, Va.
