8 CHILDREN GREET SOLDIER DAD ON LEAVE
8 of his 9 children were on hand to greet Pvt. Oliver Paternoster when he arrived last night on his 2nd furlough since he was inducted into the service last April.
The oldest son, Lawrence, 18, was inducted into the United States Navy in January & is on active duty
in the South Pacific. The other children in the family, all but 2 of whom are in school are: Maxine 17, Douglas 15, Donald 13, Oliver Jr.-11, Wayne-9, Norman-5, Terry-3 & Sandra, the baby will turn 2 on Halloween.
Although Mrs. Paternoster has had no financial worries because of her husband's induction - her allotment is $200 a month - she has kept busy being both father & mother to their family.
Help Each Other "They are good children & they don't give me any real worry, but it keeps me
busy taking care of them," she said. "They help with the household chores & the older ones
"mind" the younger. There is the shopping to do, meals & clothes to be laundered.
The ironing is the real problem." They have a neat, well-cared-for lawn & a good crop of tomatoes
in the backyard. To swell the family larder, Mrs. Paternoster also raises chickens. "We don't have
many to eat because the boys don't like to kill them." They feel the chickens are their pets but occasionally one of the neighbors will kill some for us. "The children & I miss their father, but then several Iron Mountain fathers have had to leave large families. We are making the best of it, like everyone else. When Uncle Sam calls, there is nothing much you can do about it."
Pvt. Paternoster, 37, was assigned to the Field Artillery & serves at Fort Riley, Kansas.
