ADELAIDE PATERNO, 92, of SPRING LAKE, died Wednesday, March 12, at her home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Adelaide lived there before moving to Spring Lake 75 years ago. She attended the Barnard College in New York where she earned her bachelors degree in Chemistry. Adelaide was a parishioner of St. Margaret's Church, Spring Lake. She was a member of the Zonta Club and volunteered with the Brookdale Scholarship Fund. She was a medical bacteriologist at Kings County Hospital, and she helped develop antidotes for poisonous gases at Cornell Medical College. Prior to her retirement in 1981, Adelaide was the head of the Nuclear Medicine department at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank.
Adelaide was predeceased by her brother, William Paterno, in 1996. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Charles Paterno of Vero Beach, Fla.; her sister-in-law Mrs. William Paterno of Spring Lake, and her 20 nieces and nephews, Carol Whitman, Bill Paterno, Sue Froehlich, Barbara Clark, Grace Solomon, Mike Paterno, Robert Paterno, Steve Paterno, Katie Beyer, Joseph Paterno, Patricia Flanagan, Kathleen Knise, Carla Annese, Charles Paterno, Mary Schmidt, William Paterno, Elizabeth Russell, Christopher Paterno, Ann Marie Kilgallon, and Thomas Paterno; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visiting will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the O'Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall. A mass will be offered Monday, 11 a.m. at St. Margaret's Church, Spring Lake, followed by burial in St. Catharine's Cemetery, Sea Girt. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to Embracing Hospice, 2101 Highway 34 South, Suite B Wall, NJ 07719.
