Information Technology Pioneer; Iowa native never settled, family says

A funeral will be held Monday for Council Bluffs native Kristy Joy Anthony Paper, a pioneer information technology executive who drowned April 25 while on vacation in Puerto Rico.

Paper, 60, was vice president and chief information officer for Burns & McDonnell Engineering Co. in Kansas City, Mo., and held IT positions with Aquila Energy, Utilicorp United and Peoples Natural Gas of Council Bluffs during a career of more than 30 years.

The Associated Press reported that Paper drowned at the Caza y Pesca beach in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Family members said she was caught in an undertow.

Daughter Kimberly Paper and son Adam Paper said their mother had the ability to see greatness in people and loved spending Saturday afternoons baking with her granddaughter, Ava Minae.

"She never settled for mediocrity and always endeavored to teach others that they, too, should never become complacent", they said. The family is setting up a scholarship for young women entering technology fields.

Paper had management degrees from Buena Vista University and Bellevue University and was active in leadership programs in Omaha and Kansas City. She led the Kansas City Influence Group for more than a decade and sponsored many other women in their programs.

Starting as what she called a "girl programmer" at Kiewit Co. in Omaha, she was one of few women information technology professionals at the time. Information Week magazine's Fall 2012 edition recognized her as one of the nation's top 500 innovative users of technology.

"Kris espoused and lived by these three tenets: teamwork, attitude and leadership," said Greg Graves, CEO of Burns & McDonnell. "Kris was also a great mentor to those that worked for her, and many that worked with her."

Other survivors include father Loren E. "Tony" Anthony and sisters Teri Anthony and Cindy Anthony. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Sunday. The funeral will be at 11 am Monday at Cutler O'Neill Chapel in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
