Her Grandfather was Albert Curleyhead , and her Great Grandfather was Captain Curleyhead , both important men in the Delaware community.
Joanna moved to Los Angeles in 1938 , and lived there until after W.W.II , moving North to the San Francisco Bay Area.
While in Los Angeles , she was a professional singer , performing in clubs , such as "The Gay Way" & "The Music Box". ( She would later hold down jobs as a clerk and nanny.)
Joanna was married three times , first to a Mr.DeCoy , then to Vernon Watkins , and then on October 31,1947 to Warren Charles Nichol in Berkeley,California.
Joanna & Warren had one daughter , Carol Mae.
Joanna was always active and proud of her Native American heritage. In the 1960's , during the Occupation of Alcatraz , in the San Francisco Bay , she was among those taking canoe trips , under cover of night , to bring supplies to those occupying the island!
Joanna was also an Elder in the Delaware Tribe of Indians of Bartlesville,Oklahoma.Her life stories were recorded in two books ; "Always A People:Oral Histories of Contemporary Woodland Indians" & "Long Journey Home:Oral Histories of Contemporary Delaware Indians".
She was a very caring & loving woman , whom greeted everybody with a warm hug , and kisses.
She was survived by her daughter Carol Mae , and granddaughter Miranda , as well as several nieces and nephews , and their families.
She was preceeded in death by her husband , Warren Charles Nichol , her parents , and her siblings.
