Marie Ada Palm Stewart, M.A., a long time resident of Presbyterian Village North in Dallas passed away on March 10, 2008 at age 97 after a rich and rewarding life. She was a retired elementary school teacher, principal, curriculum specialist, and artist.
She was born in 1911 in Albuquerque, New Mexico while it was still a territory. She grew up on a ranch near Deming, New Mexico. She taught at Gage, Lewis Flats and Akela. She married Raymond Malcolm Stewart, DDS in 1938 and lived to El Paso, Texas until her husband's death in 1943.
She returned in 1944 to teach third grade in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She received her BS in Education with specialization in early childhood development. The area of specialization for her Masters Degree in Education was in counseling. She was a reading specialist.
She later became an elementary school principal and then a curriculum specialist in the Las Cruces Schools where she worked until she retired in 1976. She helped develop the curriculum concept of the K-12 three year science rotation of biology, chemistry, and physics which was widely adopted by other school systems nationally. While principal at the Carl Conlee School in Las Cruces, her school received the Valley Forge Freedom Foundation Award.
Her hobbies included oil painting, doll collecting, and crafts such as china painting, leather work, weaving, and quilting. She was a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, the Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Sorority and the Astronomy Club of Las Cruces. She served on the board of the Salvation Army in Las Cruces.
She moved to Dallas in 1987 to help her son with his practice.
She is survived by her son, R. Malcolm Stewart, M.D. and daughter-in-law, Rege Stewart, M.D. of Dallas, two grandchildren, Charles E. Stewart, M.D.,Ph.D of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Sharon Schweizer, MS Engr, of Bellevue, Washington, and five great grandchildren, as well as a sister, Mrs. Susie Hosford of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Her brother, Henry Palm has preceded her in death. She was a true role model for her family and others who she taught and chose the teaching profession.
