Death: Nov. 10, 1934

Married John F. Owens on 4 Mar. 1905, in Hendricks County, Indiana; Indiana Marriage Records.

The Republican, Danville, Indiana
Thursday, November 15, 1934

A quarrel between her husband and Cleo Riggen at their home in North Salem, Saturday afternoon, was too much for the weakened heart of Mrs. John Owens and she fell dead on the porch from heart failure.

The estranged wife of Cleo Riggen and two children had made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Owens. Saturday afternoon, accompanied by Ed Cloud, Riggen went to the Owens home and asked for the children, saying that he wished to take them to Lebanon. Mrs. Riggen refused the request, stating that the court had awarded her custody of the children at a preliminary hearing last week.

Riggen became angry with Mr. and Mrs. Owen in the matter and in a quarrel became very abusive. He dared Mr. Owens to go in the public highway and fight with him. This he refused to do and in the excitement, Mrs. Owens gasped twice for breath and fell to the porch.

Mr. Cloud secured aid from Mr. and Mrs. Alva Routh, nearby neighbors, and Dr. E. Ray Royer was called, but she was beyond aid. Mrs. Owens had been in ill health for some time and her physician had warned her against any exertion or excitement.

Mrs. Owens was 73(sic) years of age, born in Boone county, the daughter of Denman and Thora Hiland. She was married to John Owens in 1903(sic). She was a member of the North Salem Methodist church.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, Tuesday morning, when sympathetic friends filled the building to overflowing and the great floral tribute showed the esteem in which she was held in the community. The Revs. Stanley Hall, W. W. Clonse of Butlerville, J. P. Alford of Colfax, and U. G. Abbott of Indianapolis were in charge of the services. Interment was in the Lizton cemetery. The husband and two uncles survive.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. U. B. Taylor and Elpha Clonse of Dayton; Mr. and Mrs. James Williams of Lebanon; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Webster of Paris Crossing; Kenneth Owens, Miss Ruth Niccum and James Owens of Blotcher.
