Scandia Journal, March 8, 1889

Henry Otto was born in Germany Sept. 12th 1817 and died at his residence four miles north of Scandia, Feb. 25th, 1889. When he was twelve years old the family emigrated to America and settled in Wisconsin. Nine years later when he had attained his majority he left the parental home and lived two years in Nebraska. In the winter of 1870 and 71 he came to Republic county (accompanied by his sister, now Mrs. E.H. Ayers, and settled in Union Tp.) He was married Nov. 29th, 1874 to Miss Emma Miller, who with five children survives him.

Mr. Otto was one of the most painstaking industrious farmers in this section, illustrating the Scripture precept "Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might." When he settled on his homestead 18 years ago, it was an unbroken prairie, but under his intelligent and assiduous care and labor with the blessing of providence it has become one of the most fruitful and valuable farms in this county. He was known among his neighbors as a man of sterling integrity, the uncompromising foe of vice, the friend of right and virtue, as such, he commended respect and confidence of all who knew him. He was deeply attached to his family and while he expressed hope and confidence with reference to the future said to his weeping wife that he should wait for her coming and only regretted that he must so soon leave the loved ones who looked to him for counsel and support to buffet the storms of life alone. A large concourse of neighbor and friends assembled to participate in the last funeral rites and drop the tear of sympathy with the bereaved ones and then we laid the mortal part away in the beautiful cemetery at Union Valley to await the resurrection morning.
