Sophie Dorethea Otte was born in 1835 in Bissendorf, Hanover, Germany (near Osnabrueck). Her parents were Heinrich Fredrick Johann "Kurt" Otte 1806 -1870 and his first wife Sophie Ilsa Marie Dorethea Balke who died about 1837 in Germany after the birth of Sophie's sister Charlotta in 1837. Her father remarried and so she was raised by his second wife Dorethea Louise Sophie Walken 1817-1846. She had three more siblings Fritz, Dora and Wilh. The family left Bissendorf and went to Bremen where they departed Sept 8, 1845 on the Big Weser. They arrived in Galveston on Nov. 27, 1846. The family traveled to the immigrant camp in New Braunfels, Comal, Texas. Diseases was bad in the camp and her step-mother and Wilh. died. Her father moved the family to Fredericksburg, Gillespie, Texas. They were some of the first settlers and so they got land from the German Company in the Fisher Miller Grant. Her father married Johanne Elesae Louise Henrietta Wiesemeyer Bahntge. A widow with a small son Fritz Bahntge. They had 5 more children: Johanna, Heinrich Edward, Marie, Heirich Carl "Henry", and Wilhelm.
Sophie married Joachim Rode 1824 – 1885on March 23, 1853 in Fredericksburg, Gillespie, TX and they had 3 children: Christina Caroline Charlotte Rode;Wilhelm Heinrich Martin Rode; and Theodore Diedrich Joachim Rode. Sophie divorced Rode. She marrid May 20, 1862 in San Antonio, Bexar, TX to Corpl. William H McIntosh 1820 – 1863. They had William James McIntosh before his death. She married 3rd on Dec. 11, 1864 in San Antonio, Bexar, TX to John A. M. Herber 1828 – 1884 . Sophie and John had 3 children: Otto(Otte) Herber; Sophie Marie Catherine; and Albert James. John died and she married a 4th time on Jan 16, 1892 to William Appenbrink. Sophie died Jan 16, 1892 in Galveston, TX.
