Maria d'Atocha "Tochita" (Otero) Chiwiwi
1941-2010
Marie Chiwiwi, age 69, a resident of Isleta Pueblo, went to the presence of her Savior on Monday, Feb. 8.
Marie was born to the Otero family of El Cerro in 1941, and was the baby of a large, loving family, amongst whom she was known as "Tochita."
Marie spent much of her life in Isleta Pueblo with her husband, children and grandchildren. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity and compassion — no family went without if she was nearby, no event was complete without her cooking and her infectious laugh.
Marie was a Los Lunas High School graduate, and later, a popular bus driver at Los Lunas Schools for more than 20 years. She loved children, and was well known among her students for being smart and sassy as much as kind and caring.
Marie believed that family was the foundation of everything, and she spent her life surrounded by those she loved through her final days.
Marie leaves us to join her husband, Jose D. Chiwiwi, in heaven, as well as her parents Manuel and Francesquita Otero. Also preceding her in death are Marie's sisters, brothers and sisters-in-law; Adela (Otero) Martinez and her husband, Jose, Clovis and Tillie Otero, Manuel and Viola Otero, Lorenzo Otero, Tony Otero, and Socorro (Otero) Vallejos. Marie is survived by her children and their spouses Diane Chiwiwi of El Cerro, Esther (Chiwiwi) Emond and her husband, Todd, of Isleta, Karl Chiwiwi and his wife, Joan, of Isleta, and Aloysious Chiwiwi, of Isleta. Grandchildren include Erika Patton and her husband, Scott Patton, Sr., Tessie Emond, Karl F. Chiwiwi, Anna Jo Emond, Bailley Emond, Justin Chiwiwi, Morgan Emond, Joshua Chiwiwi and Lanni Emond; as well as her great grandson Scott Patton, Jr. She is also survived by brother-in-law Bernie Vallejos of Albuquerque and sisters-in-law Mela Otero of Los Lunas and Lillian Otero of Albuquerque; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held for Marie at St. Augustine church in Isleta Pueblo on Saturday, Feb. 13. A Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. with the funeral Mass to follow at 11:30 a.m.
