Virginia (Ginia) L. Cummings, 84, of Evansville, went to be with our Lord on September 14, 2012, after a valiant struggle with Lou Gehrig's disease (ALS).
Virginia graduated from Reitz High School and after marrying George, she blossomed as a farmer's wife and mother. She volunteered as a 4-H Leader in the Union Farmerettes for 15 years along with teaching sewing after she had attended night classes at North High School to hone her skills. She also designed the 4-H float for the members of the Union Farmerettes to ride in the 1967 Fall Festival Parade, which also included her daughter, Georgia, who was Miss Vanderburgh County 1967, and the float was driven by her husband, George.
Virginia went to work at Hybrid Inn as a server in 1966, and after that she enrolled in LPN School, graduated in 1972, with honors and proceeded to work as an Angel of Mercy at Welborn Hospital until she retired in 1990.
She taught herself to bowl and enjoyed the bowling leagues at Franklin Lanes for over 20 years and a member of the 300 club. She garnered numerous trophies and went to State tournaments several times. She also took time to teach her daughter, Georgia, son-in-law, Gerald, and grandchildren, Brandon and Summer, to enjoy bowling as she did.
Virginia was a previous member of Freedom IV American Business Women's Association and the Civitans. She enjoyed working in her three-acre garden and preserving the fruits of her labors, sitting on the bank of the river, and fishing with her two black labs, King and Kong, visiting her friends in Homer, Alaska, enjoyed watching her wrestling on TV, and collecting owls (her collection was over 1500); but, she really enjoyed going with Syl to auctions and flea markets for those special finds and then having their annual huge yard sale; however her greatest joy was her great granddaughter, Haley, who was always making "Granny" smile with her antics.
Anyone who knew Virginia could expect to receive some of her wonderful homemade jelly on a birthday or any special event. She was a wonderfully special person who cared for everyone and she never met a stranger. Virginia will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
