He first arrived in California during the 1849 Gold Rush at the age of 22. He worked with two older brothers in the Sacramento area where they operated a private mint and a stage line. He was a driver for the mail and passenger stage between Sacramento and Marysville in 1853. About 1855 he returned east. While attending an academy in Alabama he met and married his first wife, Augusta Abigail Bradford. They moved to Texas where Ezra was involved in the cattle business, and had four children. In 1868 he brought the family to Southern California, traveling with a wagon train along the Butterfield Overland Stage route. Augusta died in childbirth in 1871 and in 1872 Ezra married Margaret Belle Houston.
