Elton "Gumpy" Olson, 77, of Tower, died Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center. He was born June 15, 1928 in Cook, the son of Victor and Marie (Hollen) Olson. He was a graduate of Cook High School and earned a degree in counseling from St. Cloud State. He was a World War II Army veteran. He married Patricia Peyla on June 25, 1949, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Ely. He was a driver for Bridgeman Russell, where he met his wife, worked in the underground mine in Soudan, was a St. Louis County cashier and collections agent and worked for the State Unemployment Services.

Elton was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tower, serving as chairman of the board, and a Sunday School Teacher. He was a member of the Nelson-Jackson American Legion Post 245 in Tower, the Rotary Club, National Wood Carvers Association and a board member of Range Mental Health Center in Virginia. He had friends and associates among various agencies across the Northeastern Minnesota area, and was a Friday R.O.M. E.O. (Retired Old Men Eating Out) member. He was an Explorer Scout leader, United Way president, school board member, taught wood carving to children in Tower and was a Tower city councilor until his disability retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Julie Ann (Darwin) Mickle, and Sally Jean Jakes; grandchildren, Jennie (Jeff) Erickson, Patrick Mickle, Michael Jakes and Savannah Jakes; three great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Harold (Arliss) Olson, Arlee (Doreen) Olson, Anna Marie (Victor) Walker, Gladys (Willard) Olson, Ruth (Sam) Fuller, Elof (Nan) Olson, and Sam (Sandee) Olson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Burial in the Lakeview Cemetery, Tower.
