Shirley Ann Stater

Shirley Ann Stater died on June 2, 2011 from complications of a stroke. She was 83 years of age at the time of her death. She was born in Oakland, California on June 5, 1927, to Arthur and Millie Olsen.

Shirley met her future husband, Glenn Ellsworth Stater, when she was 11 years old. She quickly decided that she would marry Glenn someday and she was right. Glenn and Shirley were married on June 17, 1944 when she was 17 years old. Glenn was 20 years old and serving on board a ship in the US Navy during World War II. She and Glenn had a wonderful marriage that lasted 53 years until Glenn's death in 1997.

When World War II ended, Glenn returned home to Sacramento, California and he and Shirley started their family. They were blessed with four children.

Glenn and Shirley moved their family from Sacramento to Eugene in 1960, so that Glenn, a native Oregonian, could indulge his passion for trout fishing, a passion which the rest of the family came to share.

Shirley cooked hundreds of trout dinners over the years. Although her children now fly fish with barb-less hooks and practice the art of catch and release, she continued to ask: "Did you bring any fish home to eat this time?"

Shirley was a gentle soul who was kind to everyone in her life. She loved the McKenzie River and spent a lot of time on the river in a drift boat, despite the fact that she could not swim. She also loved Neskowin Beach and the Oregon coast.

She was a simple homemaker - someone whose passing would be noticed by only a few and whose life would seem unremarkable to most people - but she had a goodness and sweetness that was indeed remarkable and she will be truly missed by her family who loved her dearly.

Shirley is survived by her sons: Gail Stater (Susan) and Bill Stater (Barbara), and her daughters: Glenna Stater and Sherry Stater. She also is survived by eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. A graveside service was held for Shirley on June 4, 2011.
