Mrs. Oliver was born June 18, 1924 in Glens Falls, New York to the late William Henry, Sr. and Viola Mae Doty Webb. She was an 11th generation Mayflower descendant of Edward Doty.
Mrs. Oliver was a graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania Nursing School in Philadelphia. She received a three year diploma in nursing. While attending, she served as a member of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corp. She was a committed nurse and cared for many family members as well as private duty nursing. She was employed with Sumter County Hospital for over 25 years. She retired in 1986 as Assistant Director of Nursing.
She came to Americus from Philadelphia in 1947 to visit her parents. Her father was transferred from New York to Americus to manage Manhattan Shirt Company. She met Harold Oliver while visiting and they married the same year. She never returned to her home in New York except to visit her nieces and nephews. She was a loving mother to her family of five children and raised them all at the same home, lovingly referred to as "1119". She spent countless hours preparing Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners not just for her children, but for the entire Oliver clan. Everyone looked forward to those yearly celebrations at Aunt Vi and Uncle Harold's.
Mrs. Oliver was a committed community leader, serving young boys as Den Mother for Cub Scouts and also served as Troop Leader for Girl Scouts. She was also administrator of the Flint River Chapter of the Girl Scouts for several years during the 1960's. She was a member of Mary Milton Lodge and enjoyed many trips with her husband to his Army railroad reunions.
Mrs. Oliver was faithful to her Lord and church family. She served as Beginner's Sunday School teacher and served later as an Elder in the church. For many years, she was leader of the Ladies Prayer Circle and held intercessory prayer meetings weekly in her home. Mrs. Oliver was also a member of the Roy Studstill Sunday School class.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Harold Oliver, Sr. "Harold", who passed away in 1993, a son, William Harold Oliver, Jr. "Bill", who passed away in 1998 and her brothers, Billy Webb, Rockwell Webb and Norman Webb.
