U.S. Congressman. Immigrating with his parents to the United States in 1854, he later settled in Wooster, Ohio and engaged in the wholesale drug and grocery business. He was a trustee of the Wooster & Lodi Railway, served as the Wayne County Treasurer (1875-79), and was Postmaster of Wooster (1885-90). In 1892, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John G. Warwick, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful for re-nomination, he was appointed by President Grover Cleveland the internal-revenue collector of the Cleveland district, serving (1893-98). After leaving politics, he resumed his former business pursuits until his death while on a trip to California.
