One of six children of Milford and Evie Robards Brown, she grew up and loved stepfather Auther "Mr. Ott" Lumley as her father. Her parents, five brothers, and husband died before her.

Her brothers were Thomas Brown, T. J. Brown, Bobby Brown and Bobby Lumley. She had a stepsister, Betty Lumley ______ who also died before her.

Elois married Thomas "Bubba" E. Oakes, Sr. in Memphis, TN on Mar. 13, 1953. The were parents of four: Thomas, Jr. Timothy Oakes, Tami Oakes Buksa, and Terry Oakes. These survive as do two beloved aunts: Carrie Hale of E. Prairie, MO and Betty Armstrong of Nesbit, MO; and three grandchildren.

Elois was a dedicated member of Hazel Crest United Methodist church and had been co-chair of the Food Pantry for the last six years. She had retired from K-Mart and had volunteered for many years at Advocate-South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest. She had also been an election judge for decades.
