HAMPTON - Verna O. Moses, 81, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, at Coliseum Park Nursing Home. Verna was born on Jan. 31, 1924, in Wilson, N.C., to the Rev. Clarence and Cassie O'Neal. She grew up in a small town called 'Coats' and attended school in Coats and in Dunn, N.C., graduating from high school at the age of 17. After high school, Verna came to Newport News, Va., and was a Peninsula resident for over 60 years. She was married to the late William Albert Moses Sr. on April 5, 1942. To that union eight children were born. She was a dedicated member of Union Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and pastor's aid member until her health failed. Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Andrew Moses Sr.; and stepson, William Albert Moses Jr. She leaves to cherish her precious memory, two sons, the Rev. William L. Moses and wife, Penny, of Siler City, N.C., and Donald Moses and wife, Romie, of Chesapeake, Va.; five daughters, Barbara Smith and husband, Earl, Angela Fitchett and husband, Anthony, and Sharon Gilliam and fiancÚ, James Kendall, of Newport News, Vanessa Moses of Hampton and Clara Nelson and husband, Wallace, of Lakewood, Wash.; and two daughters-in-law, Geneva Moses of Raleigh, N.C., and Judy Moses of Philadelphia, Pa. Other survivors include 19 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; an uncle, Daniel Evans of Fayetteville, N.C.; one aunt, Amie Massey of Buies Creek, N.C.; and a host of other relatives and dear friends. A homegoing celebration will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at Union Baptist Church, 361 Maple Ave., with the Rev. Richard A. Mims officiating. Viewing will be held from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel and at the church two hours prior to the service on Wednesday. Interment immediately follows the service at Hampton Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may be given on the guest book at Please assemble by 1 p.m. Wednesday at 137 Tidal Drive, Newport News.
