Catherine O'Neal Martin was born in Ripley County, Indiana to Noel O'Neal and Sarah Moncrief (or Muncrief) O'Neal.

She was the eldest of four children.

She was the granddaughter of Henry O'Neal and Catherine "Kitty" Henry Benham O'Neal of Otter Creek Township in Ripley County, Indiana.

Catherine was orphaned at an early age. Her mother died when she was five years old and her father died when she was ten. She was then raised in Otter Creek Township, in Ripley County, by her stepmother Olive Martin O'Neal (who was the aunt of her husband Lorenzo Martin) and then by John O'Neal as her legal guardian.

She was the sister of John O'Neal, born about 1846, who likely died as a child. Her sisters were Hannah O'Neal Ross, born about 1847 and Mary Jane O'Neal Hankins, born in June of 1849. The three sisters remained close for the entirety of their lives.

She was the wife of Lorenzo Dow Martin, a Civil War veteran from Ripley County, Indiana.

She was married to Lorenzo Dow Martin on December 31, 1865 in Ripley County, Indiana.

She was the mother of William Henry Martin, Emmazetti Martin and John Boyd Martin.

She and her husband relocated from Ripley County, Indiana first to Menard County, Illinois and then to Taylor County, Iowa after 1880.

Her mother Sarah Moncrief O'Neal originated from nearby Jennings County, Indiana, just across the county line from Ripley County, Indiana.

The burial locations of her mother and her father are unknown, but they may be at the Old Hopewell Cemetery in Ripley County, Indiana, although there are no headstones there for them.
