Mary Carolyn Baranowski, 77, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Georgetown, Texas. The cause was cardiac arrest.

Born June 25, 1938, in Palmyra, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Mahlon and Hilda O'Brien, Mary was the oldest of five children. She graduated from Millersville State Teachers College and, after two years at Rose Tree Elementary in the Philadelphia area, accepted an assignment for the Department of Defense teaching officers' children overseas during the early days of the Vietnam conflict.

One night at the Officers Club at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, the blonde bombshell met a lantern-jawed pilot from Belleville, Texas. Joseph T. Baranowski proposed after a whirlwind romance: "I'm so in love with you I can't stand it," he said. They married at Gravel Hill Church in Palmyra on June 27, 1964.

When his flying career took the newlyweds to Pensacola, Florida—and soon thereafter to Dallas, where Joe joined Braniff Airlines—Mary easily found positions at local elementary schools.

Nothing—not even a rare case of tuberculosis contracted while overseas—could dim her vivacious spirit. In addition to being a compassionate teacher, she was an avid painter, horticulturist and outdoor enthusiast—she accompanied her husband on more camping and fishing trips than she could remember. At one point, she rescued a wolf cub and attempted to domesticate it in the Dallas suburbs. Mary made sure the couple's house was open to all and a social hub for friends and neighbors.

When she tired of teaching and operating her own gardening business, she took a series of jobs until she landed a county court clerk's position in Coppell, Texas. Working with Judge Marian Moseley was one of her favorite professional chapters and a fitting end to her career.

In retirement, Mary loved gardening, painting, basket-weaving and her water aerobics routine. She and Joe moved to Sun City from the Dallas area in 2004.

Mary is survived by her husband Joseph, her son Mitch Baranowski and his wife Rachel, her granddaughter Ava Baranowski, as well as her siblings Curtis O'Brien, Celia O'Dell, Nancy Ptak and Jane O'Brien.

The family will host a visitation at Ramsey Funeral Home, 5600 Williams Drive, Georgetown, TX. Mary will be laid to rest at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking friends and loved ones to make small donations to the American Heart Association and to support this year's Go Red for Women Campaign. For more information, visit https://www.goredforwomen.org/

Mary will be sorely missed. We forever hold her in our hearts and celebrate her spirit.
