Countless people throughout the area were saddened upon learning of the death at 11:45 pm Wednesday, November 9, of J.L. Nunn, 92 year old Shamrock resident.
Mr. Nunn died in Shamrock General Hospital after an illness of only six weeks. He had been in remarkably good health despite his advanced years, and until five years ago, had been able to do some work.Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon in the First Baptist Church. Rev. Meredith F. Wyatt, pastor, was in charge of the last rites. Rev. Frank Beauchamp, pastor of the Fundamental Methodist Church delivered the message. Assisting were Mrs. Frank Beauchamp and Rev. R.K. Whitaker.Grandsons served as pallbearers: Howard McLean, John D. Nunn, Kay Nunn, Randy Mantooth, Merrill Nunn and Joe Sanford Jett.Clay Funeral Home was in charge of interment in Shamrock Cemetery.John Luther Nunn was born at Seven Springs, North Carolina, January 19, 1868. On November 7, ____, at Southern Home, Ark. he was married to Miss Exa Lee Oda Westbrook and they observed their 71st wedding anniversary prior to her death a year ago.The family moved to the Shamrock area in 1928 from Blue Mountain, Ark. Mr. Nunn farmed most of his life. He also operated a cotton gin and did carpenter work.Mr. Nunn had a striking personality. His sunny disposition and becoming laughter served as a stimulant to the spirit of his friends, who were many and from all walks of life. His firm, vigorous hand shake left an everlasting impression of warmth and sincerity.Mr. Nunn united with the Methodist Church in Logan County, Ark., in young manhood.In addition to his wife, one daughter and two sons preceded him in death; Mrs. Lily Foreman in 1951; John L Nunn and Marshall Nunn, both in 1957.Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Ida Cole of Shamrock, Mrs. Beaulah Franks of Sayre, Okla., Mrs. Eupha Higdon of Twitty, and Mrs. Mary Millsap of Ajo, Arizona.Also surviving are 23 grand children, 34 great-grandchildren, and six great great-grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Lizzie Potter, Seven Spring, S.C.; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Edna Nunn and Mrs. Bebe Nunn both of Shamrock.Published Shamrock Texan November, 1960.
