Hazel was the daughter of Harry and Cora McCristal Northup. She received her education in the Audubon County Schools and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Audubon. She was also a past president of the Degree of Honor Lodge. On November 20, 1917 she was united in marriage to Alvin Roberts in Council Bluffs IA. They spent most of their married life in Audubon where Hazel served as a telephone operator and as a retail clerk. Although Hazel and Alvin didn't have children of their own, they took care of Alvin's brother's twin daughters for the first seven years of their life.
