Gene was the second youngest of the nine children of Arthur and Regina Nock. He was drafted in 1942 and trained as a B24 tail gunner. He became part of the first crew of a B24 called the Seafood Mama, which was well known for its tail art. In February of 1943 the crew arrived in New Guinea. On May 23rd the crew were flying in a plane called Double Trouble. Dense fog made the landing difficult and the pilot crashed into the side of a mountain near the base, thinking the road circling the mountain was the landing strip. All of the crew perished. Gene was 20 years old when he died.
