ODESSA -- On Sunday, Sept. 22, 1996, at 8:15 p.m. Vera Nix Bingham, 79, went to be with her Lord and her beloved husband Grady.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest Easley and Rev. Truman Warren officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bingham was born Jan. 19, 1917, in Roscoe. She married Grady Bingham on June 22, 1935. In 1944, she moved to Odessa. Although she moved often in the early years of her marriage, Vera lived in Odessa for more than 50 years.

Vera's contribution to church and community life were many. She was a Sunday school teacher and later a superintendent of seventh and eighth grade teenagers. She worked with this age group for more than 30 years.

Vera was active on various church committees over the years. She was chairman of the Sanctuary Interiors Committee when this addition to the church was completed in the 1950s. Gradene and Ed's wedding was the second to be held in this sanctuary.

Vera served on the boards of the Globe Theater and the Odessa Girls Club. She held office in the Hospital Auxillary of Medical Center Hospital. She was a member of the Odessa Contemporary Garden Club and Honorary Mother's Club. She served as a member of the Board of Trustees of Hardin Simmons University and was selected to the honor of "First Lady of Odessa."

If one had to choose a single outstanding gift Vera had and used to the glory of God, it was a gift of hospitality. She loved to entertain her family, friends, and church groups. Many of you here today have broken bread with Vera at her house. She baked many a coconut pound cake for friends and many a peanut butter cookie for her grandchildren.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Grady, five brothers, and two sisters.

Pallbearers: Camden Chancellor, Dubb Duff, Kris Howard, Jimmie Todd, Dick Lees, Bob Colin, and Kenneth Hankins.

Honorary pallbearers: Gus Doelling, Earl Tripp, Ollie Blank, Paul Agnew, Bill Gaskins, W.L. Vincent, Ray Barham, Randy Haywood, Rudy Juedeman, Joe Day, Randy Nix, Glen and Dewain Nix, and Jimmy Evans.

Vera's generosity with church and community will be missed as will the many teas, luncheons, and dinner parties she gave. Any excuse for a celebration was excuse enough for Vera to have a party.

Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church Choir.
