When Frederick Christ Louis Niemeyer was born on December 14, 1907, in St Marys, Ohio, his father, Frederick, was 23 and his mother, Alma, was 22. Fred grew up in a strick household with a father who was a devout Christian. He had one younger brother, Cornelius, and one younger sister, Betty.

In 1923 after his freshman year of high school, he moved from Monroeville, Indiana to Fort Wayne, Indiana when his dad closed the family store that he ran with Fred's uncle, Cornelius.

Fred married Lillian Lydia Eggeman on August 23, 1932, in Preble, Indiana. They had one child, Dale, who was born seven months after their marriage. Fred and Lillian eventually settled at 3415 Holton Avenue in Fort Wayne where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

Fred initially worked as a knitter for WKM, a silk hosiery mill, and later as the head custodian for Northside High School.  Because he was tall and thin, his friends called him Slim. He loved to fish and make his own flies.  He also tended to his backyard garden, and Lillian canned the vegetables from the garden.  Described as "Cool as Coolidge" in his high school yearbook, Fred was quiet with a dry sense of humor.

He died on February 3, 1984, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, at the age of 76 from heart disease, and was buried in Covington Gardens Cemetery in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
