Dorothy spent her childhood in Miami, graduating from Edison Senior High. She met her long-time friend, Pearl Fritz, when she worked as a telephone operator at Southern Bell for a short time before her marriage. Walter was in the Navy when they married, and while he was stationed primarily in Jacksonville, FL, the Navy also took the growing family to South Florida, Alabama, California, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico. Dorothy held down the fort at home while Walter was on board ship. They moved back to South Florida in 1967 when Walter retired from the Navy, living in North Dade and Davie until March of 2014, when they moved to Jacksonville, FL to be closer to their two eldest children.
Dorothy was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ, a faithful Christian example to her family and was a faithful Lutheran for most of her life. Bible reading, study, and prayer were an important part of her day. In addition to caring for her home and family, Dorothy enjoyed reading, sewing, needlework, music, cooking and watching classic movies. The family enjoyed many wonderful meals together including Danish leg of lamb, German sauerbraten, and Key Lime Pie with homegrown key limes.
