Valentine Altes was born in Germany. Their daughter, Margaret Altes Heifner (b. 1868) died in 1944 at Deaf Smith County, Texas. Her death certificate list father as Valentine Altes, born in Germany and mother as Minerva Kelly, born in Illinois.

In the 1910 Texas census, daughter Eliza Altes (b. 1873) who is single, is living with her sister, Margaret Heifner and brother-in-law, Thomas Heifner in Deaf Smith County, Texas . Eliza later married Joseph Weaver, and died in 1956 at San Diego California, listing her father as Altes born in Germany and her mother's maiden name as Kelley, born in Illinois.

Minerva's death certificate lists father as Jacob Neese, mother unknown and maiden name unknown. According to these records Minerva's maiden name was Kelley, and she was raised by Jacob Neese.
