SALEM - Following a long illness, MaryEllen Wendel of Salem died at home on Friday, July 8 in the company of her family.
She was born April 11, 1922 in Cleveland, OH to Peter and Mary Naughton. She married Joseph Wendel on Sept. 6, 1958.
MaryEllen is survived by her husband Joseph, children Joanne (Jim) Morrison, Barb (Ed) McIlduff, Genie Wendel (Don Yeasted), Paul (Joyce) Wendel and Marti Wendel; and grandchildren Jim Morrison, Marie Wendel-Hovanic (Steve Hovanic), Emily Wendel, Matt Grimm, Eric Grimm, EJ McIlduff, and Daniel McIlduff and her sister Margaret McCarthy.
Who was she? MaryEllen was a beloved wife. She was our mom. She was Grammy.
Who was she? She was the woman on the hill at Sevakeen watching her five children splash in the lake.
Who was she? She was the woman active in church and community. She served as Eucharistic minister at the federal prison and rang the Salvation Army bells. She served as president of Ladies Catholic Benefit Association, State Regent for Ohio Catholic Daughters of America, and chairman of the board of the Community Action Agency. She was cited by the YWCA as a Woman of Achievement.
Who was she? She was the woman with the packed suitcase. She visited 49 states, missing only Hawaii. She visited Canada, Mexico, the Panama Canal, and Europe.
Who was she? She was the woman who earned a bachelor's degree in liberal arts at the age of 70, graduating summa cum laude from Kent State University.
Who was she? She was a paralegal with Northeast Ohio Legal Services into her mid-seventies.
Who was she? She was a woman who made the world a better place, and will be missed by many.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the St. Paul Catholic Church with Father Robert Edwards officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Cemetery
