Annie Myers Bates, 88, of 11170 Chatham Road, Axton, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
A native of Pittsylvania County, she was born on Oct. 27, 1915, to Judson Myers and Earlie Gross Myers.
She and her husband of 71 years, Albert Ree Bates Sr., had owned and operated A.R. Bates Grocery in Mountain Valley for 55 years. She was of the Methodist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Geraldine Rigney, Erma Lee Myers and Elnora Adkins; two brothers, Thomas Myers and Lonnie Myers; and two grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to her husband, of the home, are two daughters, Betty B. Blankenship of Mountain Valley and Irene B. Kennedy of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; four sons, Leonard L. Bates, Henry L. Bates, Albert R. "Junior" Bates Jr. and Carroll W. Bates, all of Mountain Valley; five sisters, Ruby Herman of Hickory, N.C., Cecile Mays and Edna Lawrence, both of Martinsville, Bernice Warren of Axton and Catherine Rigney of Martinsville; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Services with the Rev. Dean Ashby officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
