Henry Reginald Murphy Sr. of 3800 Highland Park Place, the retired chief cotton buyer for the old C.F. Hall & Co., died at 4:30 a.m. yesterday, Sept. 5, at Methodist Hospital. He was 87.
Mr. Murphy, who came to Memphis from Liverpool, England in 1905, had spent most of his time since retirement visiting the Memphis Cotton Exchange which he had seen change from an exciting place to a quiet spot to spend the afternoon playing dominoes.
In July, 1920, when unionized city firemen walked off the job demanding better wages. he spent a hectic month as a volunteer firemen. During that month he went from a volunteer rookie to captain in about three weeks.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow in Memorial Park with Spencer-Sturla & Hinton Funeral Home in charge.
He leaves a daughter, Mrs. William M. McDonald of the Highland Park address; a son, Henry Reginald Murphy Jr. of Fresno, CA., 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchidren.
